our team

In 2004, our company started with three carpenters offering home building services in the Bristol area.  Over the years, we have evolved to become the full-service construction company that we are today.

Our staff is a diverse community of professionals - master carpenters, building science experts, solar experts, master electricians and construction managers.  Many of our staff have been with Smith & McClain for over a decade, a testament to their exceptional talent, passion for building, and integrity.  Together, we have executed complex projects and cutting edge designs, a reflection of our collective wealth of experience and versatility.

At Smith & McClain we strive to be a great company to work for and with.  We know that the success of our projects are directly related to the relationships we develop, not just within our own team, but with our clients, subcontractors and other professional partners as well.

  • Ben Cook

Ben has been part of the team since 2015. During that time, he has grown from an able hand and jack of all trades into a skilled finish carpenter. His eye for precision is essential to executing our most intricate design elements. Ben lives in East Middlebury and is deeply involved in the local community. Outside of work, he coaches youth and high school wrestling, relentlessly rides his many bikes across all kinds of terrain, and unwinds on the links or with a fishing pole in hand.

Brad is Smith & McClain's in-house weatherization specialist and certified cellulose installer. He has years of experience meeting technical and architectural specs. When he's not lending his expertise, Brad enjoys road trips with his family, catching live music, and outdoor adventuring. He lives in his hometown of Middlebury with his wife, Nikki, and their two sons.

  • Clark Sutton

In 1984, Clark moved to Weybridge, Vermont with his wife Megan and built their home from the remains of a local one-room school. Carpenter

Hailing from Middlebury, Lukas enjoys building large-scale wood sculptures in his spare time. He loves being outdoors, especially during the snowy months, and engages in various activities such as Nordic and alpine skiing, hiking, camping, biking, and ultimate frisbee. Lukas values carpentry as an intersection of mind and hands, where analytical thinking combines with physical effort to create exceptional craftsmanship. We’re fortunate to have him on our team for his skills and attention to detail.

  • Lukas Burgess

    Carpenter

Lukas enjoys executing challenging, architectural carpentry and construction projects with his nearly 30 years of building experience. On his days off, he spends time with his two teenage kids and cat at their home in Bristol. When the sun is out, rounds of golf and trips to the beach are favorite pastimes.

  • Wilder Yost

    Project Manager, Building Division

Prior to joining the Smith & McClain team, Wilder worked in New York City focusing on high end interior build-outs for retail clients. This history led to a talent with finish work, but he is also curious and enjoys learning new things. Wilder is a likable guy with a great sense of humor, and when he isn't on the jobsite, he's raising chickens and enjoying life with his wife Dana, in Lincoln.

  • Corey Many

    Carpenter

Born and raised in Middlebury and the son of a local builder, Corey has been in the thick of home building in Addison County since his early teenage years. He particularly enjoys putting the finishing touches on the exterior of a project and is known for his steady hand with a paintbrush. Outside of work, you’ll likely find him wetting a line in the nearest body of water or keeping a heavy backbeat on his drum kit at your local watering hole.

  • Eric Foote

    Carpenter

Eric grew up among the beautiful hills and fields of Dryden, New York. Chasing his passion for skiing and the outdoors, he settled in Addison County, bringing his winning attitude to our team. The sense of accomplishment at the end of a hard day’s work is all he needs before trading his hammer for a hockey stick and hitting the ice. If he’s not whipping down a hill or across the ice, you can find him tuning up his beloved Subaru Legacy GT Wagon.

  • Tim Ashley

    Electrical Apprentice

After graduating from high school, Tim spent a few years working in aerospace manufacturing but soon realized he wanted a career that was more varied and active. He shifted gears to pursue his love for building and woodworking, and has been honing his skills ever since. In addition to his work with Smith and McClain, Duncan works as a farm hand in Sudbury. Living and working on a farm has cultivated the skills we have come to appreciate in Duncan: patience, precision, and hands-on problem-solving that suite him well for our industry. Originally from northern New Jersey, he enjoys putting in the hard hours, learning every day, and working on projects alongside talented coworkers. A die-hard NY Giants and Mets fan, Duncan spends his free time exploring Vermont, working on his Jeep, making clothes, tending his flowers, and hanging out with family and the many animals around him.

Through the years, his varied experience has come to center on fine home building. He brings his 650-lb deadlift and energetic attitude to projects big and small. Born and raised in Vermont, Brandon has lived in Monkton for the past ten years. When he’s not banging nails on the job site, you’ll find him tending his gardens or planning his next project.

    Carpenter

Heath brings more than four decades of construction experience spanning custom homes, restaurants, retail, farms, and specialty commercial builds. Starting in Vermont and working up and down the Eastern Seaboard, he’s done it all. From hands-on carpentry to leading projects and running his own contracting business. Along the way he’s also taught construction skills and mentored young builders. We appreciate his steady work ethic, problem-solving, and genuine love of the craft. When he’s off the clock, you’ll likely to find him enjoying the serenity of the forests and fields of his native Huntington.

  • Nate Steers

    Carpenter’s Apprentice

Nate spent his youth in northwest Connecticut. After graduating from UVM, he moved west to Denver, where he worked as an operations manager at a climate technology company. As often happens, the Green Mountain State called him back, and he now lives in Winooski. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, skiing, spending time outdoors, and catching as much live music as possible. As a carpenter, Nate finds real satisfaction in solving the daily puzzles that arise, and we’re lucky to have his technical thinking on our projects.
